Quick answer: the core loop

  1. Collect lunar dust as you clean.
  2. Fill your storage.
  3. Deliver the dust to a depot.
  4. Launch shipments to get paid.
  5. Spend the money on new cleaning tools and more carrying capacity.

How to make money fast

You get paid when you deliver dust to a depot and launch the shipment. Official (Steam store page)

Sell automatically with a belt

Dust and stone that reach the deposit intake by belt are paid as they come in. Patch 1.0.3 also made the intake pay exactly what its screen shows. Official (Steam announcements)

Gaming Route reports a forum reply: any conveyor belt hooked to the base's intake valves sells what arrives on it. The valves are the windows with orange rings. A Packager is optional. It just unloads tools faster. Players report (Gaming Route)

Capsules pile up at the end of an unfinished belt. Extend the belt into the depot's receiving area, and the capsules sell on their own. Reported (Whisper of the House automation guide)

Start a robot vacuum line

First automation costs from one guide, Whisper of the House. A Building Tool, one Mk I and a 30 m belt come to about $315.

Refine dust for more money

A Pressure Chamber turns dust into sand. A Stone Press turns dust and sand into stone. Sources agree (Gaming Route, Whisper of the House automation guide)

What refined goods sell for. Gaming Route's numbers come from one forum calculation that includes a 28% market bonus.

Sand (Moon Sand)3 times the value of raw dustReportedWhisper of the House automation guide
Stone (Moonstone)$17.92ReportedGaming Route
Stone (Moonstone)7 times the value of raw dustReportedWhisper of the House automation guide

$3.84 is 3 times $1.28, so the two sources agree on sand. $17.92 is 14 times $1.28, but Whisper of the House says stone is worth 7 times raw dust. So they differ on stone. Sources differ (Gaming Route, Whisper of the House automation guide)

Gaming Route calls refining the main money multiplier once your belts are running. Reported (Gaming Route)

Whisper of the House adds that this is the value of the material, not your profit per hour. Reported (Whisper of the House automation guide)

Other ways to earn

These rewards come from one guide, so each one is reported.

Think before you move buildings

Moving buildings costs money. Gaming Route reports that selling a building refunds only 75% of its cost. Whisper of the House saw a $200 building return $150. So place depots and machines near your work from the start. Sources agree (Gaming Route, Whisper of the House automation guide)

Power and production

Power comes from solar equipment in the Power section of the build menu. Reported (Gamer Blurb)

Power numbers by source. They agree on solar output and differ on the machines.

So one chamber plus one press needs 28 kW by Gamer Blurb and Whisper of the House, or 48 kW by the forum thread Gaming Route cites. Check the power display in your own game. Sources differ (Gamer Blurb, Whisper of the House automation guide, Gaming Route)

Gamer Blurb says four Solar Twin (M) units make 30 kW. That covers 28 kW in good sunlight, if nothing else draws power. Reported (Gamer Blurb)

A Solar Post costs $75. Reported (Whisper of the House automation guide)

Solar output can drop to zero at night. Stored battery power then keeps machines running until it runs out. If machines stop after sunset, check the battery first. Sources agree (Gamer Blurb, Whisper of the House automation guide)

Gaming Route says one chamber comfortably feeds two presses. Reported (Gaming Route)

The Stone Press has two inputs, one for dust and one for sand. They are not interchangeable. Split your dust belt: one branch goes to the press, and one goes to a chamber to make sand. Sources agree (Gaming Route, Whisper of the House automation guide)

The Pressure Chamber's input is on the side without the handle. Reported (Whisper of the House automation guide)

Forum replies say there is no conveyor speed upgrade. If you need more flow, run more belts side by side. Players report (Gaming Route)

Co-op tips

Gaming Route reports that patch 1.0.3 came out on October 24. Reported (Gaming Route)

October 24: A Message From the Developers

  • The team is two people. It says sorry for crashes, performance issues, multiplayer bugs, lack of automation and progression balancing.
  • Already fixed: shared upgrades for the whole crew, better FPS on Windows, save file fixes, host kick and ban, and fixes to belts, mergers, splitters and production.
  • Next on its list: J.O.O.N.A.S. units stopping when players move away, crashes and performance, automation reliability, and progression balancing.
  • It aimed to release another update within the next few days.

Official (Steam announcements)

Patch 1.0.3

  • Saves: heavily cleaned bases load again. A damaged save is now repaired as it loads, from its backup or a recent snapshot.
  • Co-op: the whole crew uses the host's upgrade matrix, and anyone's purchase upgrades everyone. Older saves keep the highest level anyone had bought.
  • Host controls: in the ESC menu, Your Crew lists everyone. The host can kick, ban and unban players there.
  • Belts: splitters and mergers built by crewmates now work. Splitters and mergers snap onto each other, port to port.
  • Performance: up to about 20% higher frame rates in the developer's tests. Smoother driving, faster teleports and fewer stutters.
  • Building: machines can stand across several foundations. The deposit intake pays exactly what its screen shows. Dust and stone that arrive by belt are paid as they come in.
  • Vehicles: any garage can call back, store and upgrade your vehicles. Demolishing a garage no longer deletes the vehicles kept there.
  • All crewmates must be on version 1.0.3 to play together.

Official (Steam announcements)

Patch 1.0.4 (October 25)

  • Night Vision Goggles: a new $350 suit upgrade. Press N to switch between helmet lamp, goggles and off.
  • Moon Map: right-click to set waypoints, focus or teleport. All robots now show on the map with what they are doing.
  • Teleport Panel: view and teleport between the stations you have found.
  • J.O.O.N.A.S.: cleans twice as fast, launches capsules to the nearest catcher from anywhere, and keeps cleaning when no players are nearby.
  • Capsule Catcher: capacity is now 100 kg.
  • Saving: big bases now save in a fraction of a second, not up to half a minute. Each save slot keeps up to 5 automatic backups outside Steam Cloud.
  • Co-op: everyone sees the same cleaned ground. Any crewmate can place splitters and mergers on belts built by others. Mergers now alternate between their inputs.
  • Fixes: machines no longer pause with "Could not pack a capsule" when they have power and materials. Players no longer fall through the Moon.
  • Windows and AMD: DirectX 11 is now the default, to prevent AMD GPU crashes. To use DirectX 12, add -force-d3d12 to your Steam launch options.
  • Saves made in 1.0.4 cannot be opened in older versions of the game.

FAQ

How many players can play Moon Sweepers?

Up to 16 players can play together in online co-op. You can also play alone. Both facts come from the Steam store page.

Is it worth refining dust in Moon Sweepers?

Refined goods sell for more, but the sources differ on how much. Whisper of the House says sand is worth 3 times raw dust and stone 7 times. One forum calculation, reported by Gaming Route, gives $1.28 for dust, $3.84 for sand and $17.92 for stone. That makes stone 14 times dust. Refining also needs power and a steady flow of dust.

How do I sell dust automatically?

Run a conveyor belt into the deposit intake. The 1.0.3 patch notes on Steam say dust and stone that arrive by belt are paid as they come in. Gaming Route reports that players hook belts to the intake valves, the windows with orange rings.

Do upgrades carry over in co-op?

The sources differ on brush upgrades. Patch 1.0.3 on Steam says the whole crew uses the host's upgrade matrix, and anyone's purchase upgrades everyone. Whisper of the House (guide updated October 24) saw brush capacity upgrades stay with the buyer in one co-op session. It also reports that each player buys their own vehicles.

What are the Moon Sweepers system requirements?

The Steam store page lists two sets of specs. Both need a 64-bit processor and operating system, plus a broadband internet connection. Minimum: Windows 10, Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, and 8 GB RAM. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon RX 570, with DirectX 11. Storage: 2 GB. Recommended: Windows 11, Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, and 16 GB RAM. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, with DirectX 12. Storage: 4 GB.
